Surfing Dolphins @ Jeffreys Bay- BBC Dolphins: Deep Thinkers

Surfing dolphins clip from the 2003 BBC “Wildlife on One” episode Dolphins: Deep Thinkers, narrated by David Attenborough. The educational clip narrates that the maintenance of social bonds in complex animal societies such as dolphins and humans may be the explanation for why both dolphins and humans exhibit “play” behaviors into adulthood and full maturity. Footage is from Jeffreys Bay, South Africa. AFAIK this special was never broadcast in the United States. Check out the BBC’s website often for the full video, as press reports have indicated they will put all their full programs online. This video continues with the next part here: www.youtube.com

Did you know that dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish?

  • JadeGreenKitty says:

sudden urge to say…. so long , and thanks for all the fish lol :) )

@ericjungleboy ok off course dolphins do it for fun; don’t think most scientist would deny that. But why dolphins that get fun out of it didn’t get extinct while the non-playing ones did; well that’s because the social advantage you get from playing. The mistake Attenborough makes is that this ‘crucial role in strengthening social bonds’ has to be actually known by the dolphins when there. Dolphins don’t know about evolution, they don’t care, but it does explain why they are the way they are.

I saw movie the cove, and after that i pray god that please kill all these japanese bastards same way, please do it for humanity, japanese mother fucker r not meant to be live in this world, they need few more nuclear attacks, god is showing them his power with tsunami, foods, earth quake, natural disaster r part of their life, whatever amount of disaster managment they do, nature has big disaster or them, fuck all japanese……… please make this comment topper if u love dolphin

  • maharley27 says:

They’re just able to figure out how to invent fun. Like surfing, making bubble rings, etc. Thats engineering in a dolphins world. XD

  • Xyfar says:

    @ericjungleboy

It’s ridiculous to assert yourself as if your ideals should be accepted. People can and will do what they want, that includes scientists. So if you don’t like it, ignore it instead of being a whiny bitch. Don’t go all fascist on someone’s ass because they “think” something.

  • up4Balangan says:

I think dolphins probably live the ultimate life..

  • rassclaat23 says:

@ericjungleboy …….. lol apparently you missed the lecture on evolution. Theoretically, there are evolutionary reasons why we even find things “fun” to begin with. A lot of which are hypothesized to be for social strengthening.

  • astralhed says:

@kenora619 no man , your mindset is that of a controlling society and you and “your” family (in your mind) is what you will believe no matter what the size of your brain compared to the dolphins that cannot speak
i’m sure there is a more intelligent human , but i cannot prove that grasshopper , can you ???

  • TheStuey1969 says:

dolphins are all about the hangtime…. humans r there 4 the smooth cruisin

  • ikevincb says:

    that dolphin keeps snaking me!

  • pyprocks108 says:

This is awesome! I love to surf and my school mascot actually is a dolphin :) we are the dy dolphins!

  • wordreet says:

The water, for us, is a mildly risky place to be, so our play there is a fun type of risk taking. But as it’s their natural environment, for dolphins, this stuff is all play. All intelligent animals need to play.

  • Fuktupratbag says:

I wonder ( if ) they saw humans at some time surfing and copied it because they saw it was fun. although… they may have been doing it WAY longer than humans have.

  • TheDolphinsreporters says:

  • TheXD3D says:

    GOOD DOLPHINS !! :D

  • BeybladinKayleen says:

Also, dolphins are also the only other species who hunt and kill for fun. Everyone always seems to forget that.

  • joanand13 says:

@BomaBoi Where did you hear that this slaughter in Taiji has stopped? It hasn’t….

  • HammerOfTheGods4 says:

@BomaBoi You’re spending way too much time arguing this, and you’re obviously not winning if the odds are against you. C’mon get off of youtube, and get a life. Nobody gives a shit. and the stats show most dolphin murders are from Japan, soooo…you’re argument really has no base. one last thing…antisemitism? im pretty sure that can only be applied to hating jews. Now you’re offending me.

  • BomaBoi says:

    @wass777 Your a bitch

  • wass777 says:

@BomaBoi fuck youre family members if they`re japanese … I`m not even American you stupid fuck !

  • BomaBoi says:

@wass777 You ignorant piece of shit. I love family members in that quake.. It was not all of Japanese that slaughtered dolphins you ignorant ignoramus.. It was a couple dozen fishermen. That does not make all fishermen or Japaense in the world ass holes so STOP segregating a race of people because of stupid illegitimate actions of a small minority. And btw, Americans participated in far worse travesties than the slaughter of a few dolphins..We slaughter thousands of people a month. THINK dumbass

  • BomaBoi says:

@wannabethug7 I appreciate your intelligence in realizing that it was a money making film.. However, humpback and jaguars are not as intelligent as dolphins. Only 4 animals in the world are self aware. Dolphins, some type of monkeys, elephants, and of course humans. Because of this self awareness, I place them in a higher priority than Whales or big cats.. Primacy of the intellect is what I believe in. However, slaughtering other innocent animals is fucked up also.

  • BomaBoi says:

@HammerOfTheGods4 It offended me!!! Its not the fucking japanese! Its a handfull of fishermen who happen to be japanese and under 5’5″.. But you dont see me saying that ALL 5’5″ PEOPLE SLAUGHTER DOLPHINS.. Its super ignorant.. ANd besides, the slaughter at Taiji stopped like a year ago.. For fuck sakes hold back the antisemitism against the Japanese.

About Finbacks
The fin whale is also called the finback whale, razorback, or common rorqual, is a marine mammal belonging to the suborder of baleen whales. It is the second largest living animal after the blue whale, growing to nearly 27 metres (88 ft) long. The American naturalist Roy Chapman Andrews called the fin whale "the greyhound of the sea" because of its great speed when chased and slender build.Long and slender, the fin whale's body is brownish-grey with a paler underside.
